How to Make Mexican Flan de Coco

Mexican Flan de Coco, a delightful coconut-flavored dessert, is a beloved treat that combines the creaminess of traditional flan with a tropical twist. This easy-to-follow recipe will help you impress your family and friends with this rich and velvety dessert. Follow these steps to create a perfect Flan de Coco.

Ingredients

To make Flan de Coco, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup of granulated sugar (for caramel)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 can (14 oz) of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) of evaporated milk
  • 1 cup of shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Preparation Steps

1. Make the Caramel

In a saucepan over medium heat, add the granulated sugar. Allow it to melt without stirring. Once it begins to melt, gently swirl the pan to help the sugar dissolve evenly. Stop heating when it turns a golden amber color. Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

2. Blend the Flan Mixture

In a blender, combine the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, shredded coconut, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth and well mixed, ensuring all ingredients are combined thoroughly.

3. Bake the Flan

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the flan mixture over the cooled caramel in the mold or ramekins. Place the flan mold in a baking dish and fill the dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold. This method is known as a water bath, which helps the flan cook evenly.

Bake the flan for approximately 60 to 75 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Keep an eye on it to prevent overcooking.

4. Chill and Serve

Once baked, remove the flan from the oven and let it cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Then, refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the best flavor and texture.

To serve, gently run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert a serving plate over the mold and flip it to release the flan. The caramel will create a delicious sauce over the top as it flows down the sides.

Enjoy Your Mexican Flan de Coco

Your delicious Mexican Flan de Coco is now ready to be enjoyed! This dessert is perfect for special occasions, holiday gatherings, or simply as a sweet treat any day of the week. The creamy coconut flavor combined with the rich caramel makes it a showstopper.

Experiment with toppings such as fresh fruit, whipped cream, or even more shredded coconut for added texture and flavor. This traditional dessert will surely become a family favorite!
