How to Make a Traditional Mexican Salsa Verde

Salsa Verde is a vibrant, tangy sauce that is a staple in traditional Mexican cuisine. Known for its fresh flavors and bright green color, it pairs perfectly with tacos, grilled meats, or as a dip with tortilla chips. Making authentic Salsa Verde at home is simple and rewarding. Here’s how to do it.

Ingredients

  • 10 tomatillos, husked and rinsed
  • 2 jalapeño peppers, stems removed (for a milder salsa, remove the seeds)
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

1. Preparing the Tomatillos

Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the tomatillos on a baking sheet. Roast for about 15-20 minutes or until they are soft and slightly charred. This roasting process enhances their flavor, giving the salsa a smoky touch.

2. Roasting the Jalapeños

While the tomatillos are roasting, place the jalapeños on the same baking sheet (if there’s room) or on a separate one. Roast them alongside the tomatillos for about 10-15 minutes until they are blistered and tender.

3. Blending the Ingredients

Once the tomatillos and jalapeños are done roasting, let them cool for a few minutes. Then, transfer them to a blender. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and fresh cilantro. Pour in the lime juice and season with salt.

4. Blending to Desired Consistency

Blend the mixture until it reaches your preferred consistency. For a chunkier salsa, pulse the blender a few times. For a smoother texture, blend for longer.

5. Tasting and Adjusting

After blending, taste your Salsa Verde. You may want to adjust the salt or add more lime juice depending on your preference. If you like it spicier, consider adding more jalapeños or incorporating other peppers.

6. Serving and Storing

Transfer the Salsa Verde to a bowl and serve it fresh with your favorite dishes. This salsa can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Its flavors will continue to develop over time, making it even more delicious.

Tips for Perfect Salsa Verde

  • Feel free to add avocado for a creamier texture.
  • If you prefer a smokier flavor, consider grilling the tomatillos and jalapeños instead of roasting them.
  • Experiment with adding other ingredients, like diced cucumbers or a dash of cumin, to customize your salsa.

Making traditional Mexican Salsa Verde at home is not only a delightful culinary experience but also a way to enjoy authentic flavors. Once you have this easy recipe down, you'll find yourself using it in countless dishes, giving your meals a burst of Mexican flair.
