Quick Mexican Fast Food Tlacoyos with Black Beans

If you're looking for a delicious and quick Mexican fast food option, look no further than Tlacoyos with black beans. This traditional Mexican dish offers a delightful blend of flavors and textures that can satisfy any craving. Perfect for busy weeknights or a casual snack, tlacoyos are both filling and nutritious.

Tlacoyos are essentially oval-shaped, thick corn tortillas usually stuffed with a variety of fillings. When combined with black beans, they create a hearty meal that’s rich in protein and fiber. Below is a simple recipe for making tlacoyos with black beans that you can whip up in no time!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 cup cooked black beans, mashed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Olive oil or vegetable oil for frying
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional)
  • Sour cream or queso fresco, for serving (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the masa harina and salt. Gradually add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water; if it's too sticky, add a small amount of masa harina.

2. Shape the Tlacoyos

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into an oval shape about 1/2 inch thick. Make sure the edges are slightly thicker to hold the filling.

3. Fill with Black Beans

Take a tablespoon of the mashed black beans and place it in the center of each oval. Fold the dough over to encase the beans and pinch the edges to seal. Gently flatten the filled tlacoyo to maintain its shape.

4. Cook the Tlacoyos

In a skillet, heat a few tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the tlacoyos in the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and slightly crispy.

5. Serve and Enjoy

Remove the tlacoyos from the skillet and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve warm and garnish with fresh cilantro, if desired. You can also add a dollop of sour cream or crumble queso fresco on top for added flavor.

Why Choose Tlacoyos?

Tlacoyos are not only easy to make but also highly customizable. You can experiment with different fillings such as potatoes, cheese, or chicharrón. Moreover, this dish is gluten-free, making it suitable for those with dietary restrictions.

These delicious tlacoyos with black beans are not just a quick meal option; they also encapsulate the rich tradition of Mexican cuisine. Now you can enjoy this flavorful dish at home anytime you crave a fast yet satisfying meal!
